About the Artist
Delos Van Earl was born in 1951 in Port Angeles, Wash., the fifth of five children in a classic Northwest logging family. He moved to Crescent City, Calif., with his family at age 5. When he entered Shasta College in Redding, he thought he would become a high school art teacher and football coach. But he would earn a bachelor's degree at California State University Chico and a master's in fine art from Mill's College in Oakland. He lives in Joshua Tree with his wife, Jena.
Delos does these literally in a very backwards way, putting on about twenty layers of paint over months and months and then letting them dry for many more months before sanding them back to a smooth surface. He gets incredible color combinations that he doesn't expect to find all those months later, which is a lot of fun for him. But what always amazes people is that the surface of the finished pieces is nearly completely flat (some more than other), and for that reason, it's important to encourage people to run their hands over the surface. They won't hurt the surface, and they'll get up close to see all the color that at first cannot be appreciated when standing further away. You can look at these paintings for years and not see everything in them.
Artist Statement
"You have to come up with something that intrigues you and stimulates you, and challenges you enough to commit your life to doing this. The challenge has to be something that helps you to understand and accept life... and to be a better person. There is a revealing aspect to making art. That's what a lot of my process is about. The paintings are like collecting memories, and then creating a memory dialogue. It's a strange process. It has to be about more than just making objects or painting. It must be deeper. It is an involvement in life."
