Lisa M. Gordon was born and raised in Southern California. As a teen she rode and trained her three horses. The pathos seen in Gordon's sculptures arose from the intrinsic love of caring for her horses. Within the precarious surroundings of the suburbs, one stable after another closed due to the numerous tract home developments. This gradual encroachment became the catalyst for her bronze sculptures.
Gordon recieved her MFA from California State University, Fullerton, in 1992. During her education she developed a passion for bronze casting. The innate relationship between the casting process and her love of horses can be seen in her powerful, yet sensitive sculptures.
In the past, Gordon has worked for numerous fouindries throughout the Southwest. Experience has given her the opportunity to continue with a "hands on" approach to creating her work. She carries each piece (with exception of the metal pouring) through the entire process. Gordon believes it is an essential element in her work.
Currently, Gordon lives in Sante Fe, New Mexico with her dog, Taz.
Artist Statement
The emotional bond between the horse and myself goes beyond simple childhood fascination. Horses have always been an intricate part of my life. I drew and mimicked them as a child; I owned and trained them as a teen; studied and revered them in college. Now as an artist it is natural that I sculpt the horse's image. The horse is the figure through which I actualize my ideas. It becomes a tangible bridge between the viewer and me. My goal is to render the horse with empathy and respect without getting bogged down in realities. I strive to breath new life into an often cliche historical subject. By using tension and whimsy and by juxtaposing figure and form my sculptures are carving out a space of their own int he world of quine sculpture.
