ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Turning my attention back to a long held interest in zoology, cabinets of curiosities, and graphic design, this latest body of work, Bestiarum Vocabulum, explores the personification of animals, our need to collect them as specimens, and the gray area in between.
Attaching emotional states and moral judgement to animal symbology is a long standing tradition in the visual arts and literature. While some of this work is merely a cataloging of creatures I find interesting, other pieces attempt to touch upon our collective understanding of their symbolism and our relationship with it.
BIOGRAPHY
Miranda Lake was born in Norwalk, CT in 1969. After completing her B.A. in Art History at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Lake spent many years traveling around the country and abroad before settling in New Orleans in 1998. She began her career as a full time artist in 2004, and now exhibits widely around the country and teaches occasional workshops in digital imaging and encaustic collage.
Lake's work combines one of the oldest, most archival forms of painting with the digital darkroom creating a bridge and exploring the tension between past and present, both personal and collective. Drawing great inspiration from the crumbling grandeur of the Crescent City, and the steadfast resilience of those who chose to remain there after the flood, much of Lake's work is focused on assimilating the paradoxical nature of life in post diluvian New Orleans.
The work transcends geographic specificity by tapping into familiar archetypes and imagery, while also relying on a personal iconography that translates into a unique vision that is at once fanciful and dream like while hinting at a darker undercurrent of psychological tension. In her own words...
Ambiguity can lead to transformation, and grace can be found in the midst of despair. This liminal space where a certain beauty intersects with adversity and loss has been a recurring theme not only in my life and my work, but in the very city where I live.
I find it to be very fertile ground.
